Helping our customers make informed decisions
From runners and athletes to busy workers under pressure; the problem of sweaty feet has plagued many over the years. It’s an oft forgotten fact that sweating is actually one of the ways in which our bodies cool down, and with 500,000 sweat glands housed in each pair, the average human foot produces around half a pint of sweat a day. But whilst perspiration in itself may be little more than an uncomfortable irritation, excess sweating can lead to a whole host of ailments including athletes foot and a variety of fungal infections, conditions which can sometimes require medical attention.
But what causes sweat? Although simple over-heating is the most obvious answer, there are many factors which can influence how much we perspire. Physical stress placed upon the body during exercise certainly makes an impact, but emotional stress can also bring about a similar reaction, with teenagers and pregnant women thought to be particularly susceptible on account of their often-unpredictable hormone fluctuations. Beyond this, Some people are thought to simply inherit the condition, with other experts pointing to diet and toxin levels as additional sources of the problem.
So what can be done? Whilst many have attempted to combat the problem, few have done as much as French company Glagla. Marketed as ‘The Lightweight Ventilated Shoe’, the Glagla footwear range does exactly what it claims to, offering feet a fresh supply of air through a combination of traditional mesh panels and innovative design mechanisms.
The bulk of the Glagla collection achieves this superior air circulation through a series of vent slots, carefully moulded into the sole of each shoe. With two on the heel, three across the ball and one in the centre, the slots are designed to draw in air as you move, pushing it throughout the interior of the shoe and out again as you step down. Through this patented system, Glagla shoes claim that they can keep your feet on average 6 degrees cooler than a standard shoe would, and discharge twice as much moisture from inside the shoe in the process.
With a product range that covers clogs, trainers and sports shoes for men, women and children, Glagla are the perfect choice for people looking to beat sweat whether it’s at work, at home or at the gym. What’s more, Glagla shoes are safe and easy to wash in your home washing machine, making them the perfect choice for people who want to keep both their shoes and their feet as clean and fresh as possible.

When it comes to working out, most of us can admit that we need all the help we can get. With our modern-day lifestyles growing ever more hectic, it can be hard to make time to hit the gym or slide into our running gear for a jog around the block, particularly when the outcome leaves you tired, sore and soggy with sweat. But are you wearing the right thing? Many of us jump at the chance to try the latest superstar diets and flock to whatever workout class is suddenly in fashion, but when it comes to effective exercise, your wardrobe choices play a bigger part than you might think.
Perhaps one of the most off-putting aspects of exercise is the sweat factor. Whether or not you buy into the old adage of ‘If you’re not sweating, you’re not doing it right’, perspiration is a natural part of the workout process, and even though it may be tough to prevent it, innovations such as Adidas’ Climacool technology can help to minimise its lasting impact.
Made from a combination of warmth and moisture management materials, the Adidas Climacool sportswear range is designed to move heat and sweat away from the body through ventilation channels built into its three-dimensional fabric. These channels allow air to reach the skin, instead of locking it beneath a wall of dense material that acts as a perspiration prison, thus allowing moisture to evaporate and escape instead of lingering on your body.
But how did they come up with it? The first step was to use sophisticated infrared cameras to generate thermal body maps of athletes in action. These were analysed and used to identify the key spots where sweat formed during a particular exercise. From there, the Adidas team were able to design ways of ensuring that fresh air reached the problem areas.
For those that want an even more comprehensive cooling experience, Adidas just last month launched an enhanced range called Climachill. The new collection features strategically-placed aluminium cooling spheres sewn into the fabric, providing an instant cooling sensation and drawing heat further from the body.
Perhaps most importantly, Adidas have been quick to acknowledge that our bodies react differently to different sports. To this end, the Adidas Climacool range covers everything from golf and running gear to rugby and football kits, ensuring that whatever you take on, you’re guaranteed protection that is designed with you in mind.

Socks are often overlooked. Most men buy them without a thought or pick the first pair they see from their drawer and then put them on. Because socks are often bypassed as just regular articles of clothing, their quality tends to be ignored, too. What you might not know is that socks are not just underwear or protective articles of clothing for your feet—they must also work to minimise odour, keep your feet comfortable, and absorb sweat. With these in mind, you need to choose and buy your socks with care. Here are tips you can use when shopping for the best pair of men’s socks:
1) Not all socks are the same. They differ in the comfort they provide and the materials that they are made of. The best materials for socks are cotton, acrylic, and wool. These are natural fibres that help prevent stinky feet.
2) Use cotton for summer, wool for winter. Some socks are great for cold weather; some are best worn when the temperatures are high. Wool has natural insulating properties that keep your feet warm, but they tend to be thicker, making them more ideal when it’s cold. Cotton socks breathe, keeping your feet cool and dry when it’s warm.
3) Cotton socks have more variety in colour and design. Most manufacturers can create a wide range of socks from cotton, too, including trouser socks (for work and formal occasions) and athletic socks (for sports).
4) Check for allergies. Some people are allergic to wool, making cotton socks better for them. Be sure to buy socks made of 100% cotton to avoid allergic reactions and skin irritation.
5) No time to wash immediately after use? Go for wool socks. They’re low maintenance and do not need to be washed instantly after wearing. However, keep in mind that they require special care, such as requiring handwashing and air-drying. Never use a washing machine to clean wool socks.
6) Buy by the bulk. It’s cost-effective and you get two or more pairs for a cheaper price than when you buy socks separately.
With the help of Fred Finn, the World’s Most Travelled Man, Universal Textiles spread the gift of warmth this winter, donating thousands of pieces of thermal clothing and hats to vulnerable and homeless young people supported by national youth charity, YMCA.
Fred Finn, who has visited 141 countries and travelled over 15 million miles, flew in especially to handover the thermal clothing, swap tips and share experiences with young residents from City YMCA London. With the help of Universal Textiles, Fred will be distributing 1,500 free hats and premium FLOSO thermals totalling £8250 to young people at YMCAs throughout the country.
Having worn Thermals from Universal Textiles for years Fred swears by them, saying:
“The trick to surviving the cold is to wrap up warm and wear more layers. Far too many people overlook the benefits something as simple as putting on an extra layer of thermals. The FLOSO thermals have probably saved my life on many occasions in many different countries where temperatures would otherwise been unbearable.”
With the cost of heating our homes rising and the ever more unpredictable weather, Fred and Universal Textiles hope to spread the word about the under-appreciated benefits of thermal clothing. This is an issue recognised by Suzi Browne, spokesperson for YMCA England, who states:
“Christmas and the winter months can be particularly difficult for those who are sleeping rough or in low income homes and unable to afford the rising costs of heating. We are very grateful to Fred Finn and Universal Textiles for their kind donation, which will be distributed via YMCA services and drop in centres to those who need it most.”
See the links below to just some of the YMCA centres who benefitted from Universal Textiles’ donation.
