Men’s Socks – The Rules

There’s snow on the ground… yet again… and your feet are closest to it, so wrap them up! While there aren’t strict guidelines to follow, there are some rules when it comes to wrapping up your feet in a certain colour.

White socks are only for sport – While some people wear white socks for every occasions, white socks should really only be worn for sports. There’s nothing worse than seeing a well-dressed business man with two inches of white socks exposed between his trousers and his shoes. Even when wearing jeans, try to avoid white socks.

Formal shoes require formal socks – For any formal event, men’s normal thick black socks will simply not suffice. If you are wearing a pair of smart shoes, you should wear some thin cotton socks, which will not bunch over the top of the shoe like normal socks and allow your foot to sit more comfortably in the shoe.

Match socks to your trousers – Many people make the mistake of matching the colour of their socks to the colour of their shoes, but the trick is to actually match them to the colour of your trousers instead. If you’re wearing brown shoes, wear brown socks, and if in doubt, always go for a darker shade of sock than your trousers.

  • This rule exists 1.) to give the simple-minded, “no gray area” type of guy guidelines to follow, and 2.) because visually, it elongates the leg (a good thing), whereas when you’re matching socks to shoes, it doesn’t do that.

  • This is a rule that many people are confused about. I’ve heard numerous arguments about whether you should match socks with shoes or socks with pants. You should always match socks with pants because when you sit down and your socks are exposed, you want a solid line of color from your pants to your shoes. Socks that don’t match your pant color create a jarring break in your outfit. So black socks go with black pants and brown socks go with brown pants. Absolutely and under no condition should you ever wear white socks with dark pants unless you want to look like Steve Erkle or 1980′s Michael Jackson.

  • white shoes-white socks brown shoes-brown socks black shoes-black socks easy enough for ya’?

  • I’m going to start my new job soon. For “business casual”, I guess I can wear botton-down shirts, khaki pants and oxford shoes? I’m not sure about the color of socks – are white socks ok or do I have to wear dark colors?
