Thermal Clothing: What You Need To Know

Thermal clothing is the perfect way to keep extra warm throughout Autumn and Winter. They are also useful if you want to keep the cold out while playing winter sports or simply enjoying the outdoors. This is why you need to shop for high-quality thermal clothing. The next time you go shopping for winter thermals, keep these important tips in mind:

  • Check the materials. When it does to thermal wear, it’s all about the fabric. Low-quality thermal underwear does not wick your sweat away, leaving you feeling wet and cold. It’s a good idea to spend a little bit more money on “wicking” thermal clothes made of materials that easily spread out moisture. You want a thermal garment that moves sweat away from your skin and dries quickly. Look for thermal clothing that is made with lightweight and stretchable materials like spandex and polyester, so they easily balance moisture and temperature. Try to avoid polypropylene because it tends to retain odour and becomes stinky.
  • Fleece is fantastic and you can’t go wrong with it. It’s a tried and tested insulator, making it perfect if you spend a lot of time outdoors. It still performs even when wet, and it dries quickly because the material spreads the moisture out.
  • Layering is the key to staying warm. Invest on thermal sweaters, turtlenecks, pullovers, and vests. If you are outdoors a lot, you need an exterior layer that repels water from snow, rain, or sleet, and effectively blocks wind.
  • Protect your face, neck, head, and extremities. Did you know that 60% of your
body heat escapes from your head? Preserve that heat by wearing a thick,
insulating hat. A fleece neck gaiter or scarf is also recommended to cover your neck area. You also need insulated gloves and medium-weight or lightweight thermal socks.

Universal Textiles Donates to the YMCA!

FredFinnYMCA MattWith the help of Fred Finn, the World’s Most Travelled Man, Universal Textiles spread the gift of warmth this winter, donating thousands of pieces of thermal clothing and hats to vulnerable and homeless young people supported by national youth charity, YMCA.

Fred Finn, who has visited 141 countries and travelled over 15 million miles, flew in especially to handover the thermal clothing, swap tips and share experiences with young residents from City YMCA London. With the help of Universal Textiles, Fred will be distributing 1,500 free hats and premium FLOSO thermals totalling £8250 to young people at YMCAs throughout the country.

Having worn Thermals from Universal Textiles for years Fred swears by them, saying:

“The trick to surviving the cold is to wrap up warm and wear more layers. Far too many people overlook the benefits something as simple as putting on an extra layer of thermals. The FLOSO thermals have probably saved my life on many occasions in many different countries where temperatures would otherwise been unbearable.”

With the cost of heating our homes rising and the ever more unpredictable weather, Fred and Universal Textiles hope to spread the word about the under-appreciated benefits of thermal clothing. This is an issue recognised by Suzi Browne, spokesperson for YMCA England, who states:

“Christmas and the winter months can be particularly difficult for those who are sleeping rough or in low income homes and unable to afford the rising costs of heating. We are very grateful to Fred Finn and Universal Textiles for their kind donation, which will be distributed via YMCA services and drop in centres to those who need it most.”

See the links below to just some of the YMCA centres who benefitted from Universal Textiles’ donation.

How Does Thermal Underwear Work?

Now that winter is well on the way we’re all feeling a bit of a chill in the air. Those who enjoy outdoor activities will be feeling it more keenly than most and it’s the perfect time to invest in some quality thermal underwear from Universal Textiles. In addition to our popular range of baby boy and baby girl clothes and other baby wear, we sock a range of thermal products for adults and children of all ages, shapes, and sizes.

It’s easy to assume that thermal tops and leggings just provide another layer of clothing between you and the winter chill but there is a little more to it than that. Modern thermals are pretty clever in the different ways they work to keep you warm and comfortable when it’s cold outside.

First of all, a layer of close fitting fabric right next to the skin reduces airflow and the slight draughts that would normally travel up loose trouser cuffs and down the arms and necks of jumpers. This means less heat is lost trying to warm up the air in between you and your outer clothing. Secondly, the fabrics we and other quality manufacturers use is quite special. It’s much warmer than a normal cotton or polyester material for the same kind of weight.

Maybe the smartest thing that high tech thermal clothing does is manage moisture. That’s particularly important for sportspeople. Imagine you go for a walk up a big hill on a cold winter day. When you’re working hard on the way up you’ll start to sweat. Thermal fabrics will help move that moisture away from your skin and evaporate it away so you don’t feel wet and cold on the way down.
